Starbucks Says It Isn't Buying Chipotle. The Median Chipotle Is Already 1,030 Feet From a Starbucks.

We mapped 4,044 Chipotles against 14,860 Starbucks. Nearly nine in ten have one within a mile.

Starbucks says it isn't buying Chipotle. Across 4,044 Chipotles, the median distance to the nearest Starbucks is 1,030 feet, and 88.7% have one within a mile.

Key takeaways

  • Starbucks said Monday it is "not buying Chipotle," four days after the Financial Times reported it had explored a takeover of the burrito chain, which the FT valued at $41 billion.
  • Chipotle's stock round-tripped. It closed up 6.2% at $32.68 on the report, then fell two straight sessions to $30.40, below its pre-report close and about 18% lower for the year.
  • Across the 4,044 Chipotles in Pourcast's national location data, the median distance to the nearest Starbucks is 0.195 miles, about 1,030 feet. 88.7% have a Starbucks within a mile.
  • In a random sample of 299 Chipotles routed by car without traffic, the median drive to the nearest Starbucks was 2.9 minutes, and 78.6% were within a 5-minute drive.
  • The overlap is lopsided. 41.9% of the 14,860 Starbucks have a Chipotle within a mile; 8,628 do not.

Four days in October

On Oct. 8 the Financial Times reported that Starbucks "has explored a takeover of Chipotle Mexican Grill" and had worked with advisers in recent months on a potential acquisition. It described the plans as early-stage.

On Monday, Starbucks ended the speculation. "As a matter of policy, we don't comment on rumors and speculation, but we want to be clear we are not buying Chipotle," a spokesperson said. Chipotle declined to comment.

The backstory is familiar. Brian Niccol ran Chipotle for six years before leaving for Starbucks in 2024. A deal would have topped Burger King's $11.4 billion purchase of Tim Hortons in 2014, the largest restaurant acquisition on record, and William Blair estimated a takeover could cost closer to $50 billion with a typical premium.

The round trip

Chipotle's takeover gain was gone two sessions later. On Oct. 8 it traded more than 60 million shares, roughly four times its three-month average, and closed at $32.68. It fell 3.3% on Oct. 9 and another 3.8% on Monday, closing at $30.40. That's below its Oct. 7 close of about $30.77, down about 18% from $37.00 at the end of 2025 and 29% below its 52-week high of $42.82. At Monday's close the company was worth about $38 billion, down from the $41 billion the FT cited.

Starbucks swung less. It fell as much as 6.7% during the Oct. 8 session before closing down 0.4%. It slipped 2.6% on Oct. 9, then rose 1.7% to $92.29 on Monday after the denial. At about $105 billion, it's worth roughly 2.75 times Chipotle.

Expectations were already modest. In July, Chipotle guided to about 1% comparable sales growth for the third quarter, which CFO Adam Rymer said assumes a drag of roughly 2 points from an industrywide cyclospora outbreak. CEO Scott Boatwright said the products involved aren't on Chipotle's menu.

Most analysts were skeptical. William Blair's Sharon Zackfia saw "no obvious revenue synergies between the two brands." TD Cowen's Andrew Charles called it "a low-probability" event and wrote, "Our initial reaction is skepticism." Stephens analyst Jim Salera pointed to the real estate, estimating that about 90% of Chipotles sit within a mile of a Starbucks.

We ran the real estate number ourselves.

Same block

Pourcast's national location data has 4,044 Chipotle locations after removing duplicate listings, and 14,860 open Starbucks. Chipotle reported more than 4,200 restaurants at the end of June, almost all of them in the U.S., so the Chipotle side is close to complete. Starbucks reported 16,933 U.S. stores, so our Starbucks count runs about 12% short. For Chipotles, that makes every distance below an upper bound and every within-range share a floor.

For each Chipotle we measured the straight-line distance to the nearest Starbucks.

| Distance to nearest Starbucks | Chipotles | Share | |---|---|---| | Under 0.1 mile | 1,203 | 29.7% | | 0.1 to 0.25 mile | 1,168 | 28.9% | | 0.25 to 0.5 mile | 706 | 17.5% | | 0.5 to 1 mile | 512 | 12.7% | | 1 to 2 miles | 280 | 6.9% | | 2 to 5 miles | 149 | 3.7% | | Over 5 miles | 26 | 0.6% |

The median is 0.195 miles, close to Stephens' 0.18 from a separate dataset. 728 Chipotles have a Starbucks within 100 meters, often close enough to share a parking lot.

By car

Straight lines ignore highways, medians and one-way streets. So we took a random sample of 299 Chipotles and routed each one by road, without live traffic, to its three nearest Starbucks by straight line, keeping the fastest.

| Drive to nearest Starbucks | Share of sampled Chipotles | |---|---| | Within 1 minute | 16.4% | | Within 2 minutes | 32.8% | | Within 3 minutes | 50.5% | | Within 5 minutes | 78.6% | | Within 10 minutes | 97.3% |

The median drive was 2.9 minutes. 89.3% of the sampled Chipotles have a Starbucks within a straight-line mile, against 88.7% for all 4,044. The sample sits slightly closer than the full set (median 0.17 miles against 0.195), so drive times may run a little short.

State by state

The overlap holds almost everywhere Chipotle operates. In California, 96.7% of 517 Chipotles have a Starbucks within a mile, and the median distance is 0.13 miles. Oregon is at 98.2% of 57, Washington 96.3% of 82.

| State | Chipotles | Starbucks | Starbucks per Chipotle | Chipotles with a Starbucks within 1 mile | Median distance (mi) | |---|---|---|---|---|---| | California | 517 | 2,688 | 5.2 | 96.7% | 0.13 | | Texas | 367 | 1,325 | 3.6 | 90.7% | 0.21 | | Florida | 319 | 851 | 2.7 | 82.1% | 0.26 | | Ohio | 266 | 448 | 1.7 | 77.1% | 0.20 | | New York | 243 | 623 | 2.6 | 91.4% | 0.14 | | Illinois | 182 | 635 | 3.5 | 93.4% | 0.16 | | Pennsylvania | 154 | 417 | 2.7 | 80.5% | 0.21 | | Virginia | 147 | 445 | 3.0 | 92.5% | 0.17 | | Georgia | 135 | 397 | 2.9 | 85.2% | 0.24 | | Maryland | 127 | 275 | 2.2 | 85.0% | 0.17 | | North Carolina | 119 | 441 | 3.7 | 89.1% | 0.26 | | Arizona | 111 | 487 | 4.4 | 90.1% | 0.22 |

The weakest overlap among large Chipotle states is Ohio, where 77.1% of 266 Chipotles have a Starbucks within a mile and there are only 1.7 Starbucks per Chipotle, the lowest ratio of any state with 50 or more Chipotles. Among those states, New Jersey (79.8%) and Pennsylvania (80.5%) are next.

Texas follows the national pattern. 90.7% of 367 Texas Chipotles have a Starbucks within a mile. Within 40 miles of DFW Airport it's 93.8% of 130, and within 40 miles of downtown Houston 91.8% of 97. Austin is the outlier, at 79.5% of 39 with a median of 0.41 miles. San Antonio sits at 86.2% of 29.

The lopsided side

Turn the map around and the overlap thins out. Of the 14,860 Starbucks, 6,232 have a Chipotle within a mile, or 41.9%. The other 8,628 don't. 1,996 Starbucks are more than five miles from any Chipotle, and Hawaii and Alaska have 122 Starbucks and no Chipotles.

Part of that gap is Starbucks' format. Its count includes licensed stores inside grocery stores, airports and campuses, where a Chipotle wouldn't go. Part of it is Chipotle's runway: the company plans 350 to 370 openings this year.

Same corners, different hours

On footprint alone, a combined company wouldn't have gained much territory. It would have stacked two dayparts on the same corners. Niccol told Adweek in September, before the takeover reports, "We're pretty darn good in the morning, but we have to be much better in the afternoon."

The loyalty programs are big on both sides: 35.6 million 90-day active U.S. Starbucks Rewards members as of Starbucks' fiscal second quarter, and 21 million Chipotle Rewards members, according to Axios.

Chipotle reports third-quarter results on Oct. 28. Starbucks reports fiscal fourth-quarter results on Oct. 29.
